Drop off/pick up
We would like to encourage parents to utilise the car park on Harvey St for the dropping off and picking up of students. This is a much safer option, especially when collecting your child and will hopefully reduce the high volumes of traffic we are experiencing on 13th Avenue. For those who still require dropping off and picking up students from 13th Avenue please ensure you collect your child from within our school grounds. For their own safety children are not permitted to wait outside the school gate on the grass verges. Please also use the gate adjacent to our school office. At the end of the day, this gate is used by those boarding school buses.
Kapa Haka
Our St Mary’s Extension Kapa Haka Roopu, Hato Maria, is a group of tamariki who meet every week with our wonderful Kapa Haka kaiako, Matua Tūmanako.
During our weekly sessions, we practise haka, learn new waiata and sing beautiful renditions of waiata we know well.
The group performs at a number of celebrations throughout the year, including our New Families Liturgies, Grandparents Concerts, Catholic Inter-school competitions, and at our End of Year Prize Giving.
In 2016 we hosted the Tauranga Moana Rā Whakangahau, a two day kapa haka festival for forty two local schools. The theme was ‘Kia Nui Te Aroha’ ‘Let there be great Love’.
Music
Music tuition is offered for various Instruments, some of which are funded by the Ministry of Education, making lessons very affordable, as little as $3 per week.
These options are Violin, Ukulele, Flute and Recorder. (instrument hire is available, subject to availability)
In addition to this, we have private tutors who come to the school several times a week and provide tuition in Keyboard, Stomp Drumming, Singing and Guitar. These lessons are charged out by tutors and prices vary. Please contact these tutors directly to arrange bookings.
Guitar – Mike Nicholson – 0212083198 or 576 3404
Keyboard – Colette Alefounder – 0274940683 or colette.musicstudio@gmail.com
Drumming – Tanya (admin) – tanya@mor.net.nz
Singing – Colette Alefounder – 0274940683 or colette.musicstudio@gmail.com
All lessons are onsite and usually run at lunchtime or before school in the morning.
Those students who are learning a musical instrument will also have the opportunity to join our school band.
St Mary’s also has a school choir – “Sursum Corda” who practice weekly on a Wednesday and sing on various occasions, including Mass at St Mary’s Church.
If your child is interested in participating in any of the music options listed, or if you have any questions relating to our music programme please email Karen Mulhern at: kmulhern@stmarystga.school.nz or make contact through the school office – 07 578 8066.
Policies
SchoolDocs was established in 2006 as a collaborative venture between experienced educationalists and a specialist policy and procedure company. It is an online review process that enables stakeholders to provide feedback to our school via the internet (either from a home computer or one made available to you at school).
We have a comprehensive and up-to-date set of policies and procedures that is regularly and collaboratively reviewed.

Sports
St Mary’s offer a wide range of sports for children to participate in throughout the year.
In Term 1, we have Rippa Rugby, Volleyball, Cricket, Flippa Ball and Water Polo. Children can also learn Tennis, Gymnastics, Hip Hop and Jump Jam.
In Term 1, our senior students have swimming sports, and the top qualifiers go on to represent the school at a South Cluster Schools level and then on to a Western Bay level.
All classes make use of the school pool during Term One also.
In Term 2, we start our Winter Sports. We offer Netball, Basketball and Hockey. Tennis, Gymnastics, Hip Hop and Jump Jam also continue.
Term 2 is when we run our School Cross Country, and like swimming, our top qualifiers go on to represent St Mary’s at a South Cluster level and then on to Western Bays.
Term 2 is when we have ‘World Cup’ tournaments for Rippa Rugby and Basketball. These are a great occasion for the kids as they get to dress up as a country and lots of games are played against different schools in the Bay.
Term 3 is a continuation of our Term 2 sports.
Term 4 we go back to offering the same sports as we do in Term 1. The Senior children begin athletics in their respective class groups which end with a Year 5/6 Athletics Day. The top qualifiers from this go on to represent St Mary’s at South Cluster and then once again on to Western Bays.
We have a dedicated group of parents who put in a lot of time and effort coaching and managing our sports teams. Without them, we couldn’t offer such a great selection of sports for our children. We are always on the hunt for more keen parents and provide support and resources to make it as easy as possible.
